What Principals Have Said

TY

Tan Sri Y.

Managing Director, manufacturing group · Selangor

"I came in with two or three things that had been sitting with me for a while — nothing acute, but questions I couldn't quite resolve on my own. The engagement gave me a structured way to think them through. The written reading was candid, which I appreciated. Some of it I agreed with immediately; some of it I needed time to sit with. That's probably the right outcome."

"The board succession work was well-handled. Speaking to each director separately, with someone outside the firm facilitating those conversations, surfaced things that would not have come up in a board meeting. The advisory document was thoughtful. I would have found a slightly longer treatment of the succession timeline useful, but the core reading was sound."

"The retainer arrangement suits how I work. Having a counterpart available when something comes up — not a formal meeting, just a conversation — is more useful than a quarterly advisory session. The written notes after each session are something I actually refer back to. I renewed after the first year without much deliberation."

Managing Director, financial services · Penang

"What I valued most was the absence of an agenda on their side. The reading they gave me wasn't designed to lead anywhere commercially. It was simply their view of what the situation looked like from outside. That's harder to find than it ought to be."

Board Chair, government-linked company · Kuala Lumpur

"The succession advisory was handled carefully. The individual director conversations were clearly conducted with discretion — the directors told me afterwards that they had felt comfortable speaking openly. The advisory document reflected things I had sensed but not articulated. It was useful to have them set out plainly."

"We began with the four-week reading and extended to the retainer the following year. The initial engagement was good enough that I wanted something more regular. Two years on, the monthly sessions remain a useful part of my working rhythm. The written notes are brief but they serve as a record of how my thinking has moved over time."

Engagement Illustration 01 · Strategic Reading

A managing director facing two competing internal narratives about the firm's next phase

The situation

The MD's two most senior colleagues held substantially different views about whether the firm should consolidate its existing operations or move into an adjacent category. Both had been presenting their cases internally for some months. The MD found himself caught between two well-argued positions and was looking for an outside reading of the underlying question.

The engagement

We conducted a listening session with the MD and, separately, with one colleague of his choosing. We reviewed the internal materials each camp had produced. Over the following two weeks we prepared a written reading of three aspects of the question that we thought deserved closer attention before any decision was taken.

What followed

The written reading identified a third consideration that neither internal narrative had fully addressed — namely, the firm's capacity to absorb either change at the pace being proposed. The MD used the reading as the basis for a revised conversation with his senior team. Six months later he told us the engagement had helped him slow the decision to a pace at which it could be made well.

Engagement Illustration 02 · Board Succession Advisory

A board chair preparing for the departure of two long-serving independent directors in the same year

The situation

Two independent directors — both of whom had served for over a decade — were due to retire within the same financial year. The chair wanted to use the moment thoughtfully, rather than simply replacing like for like. She was uncertain how to frame the question for the board as a whole without creating anxiety about the transitions.

The engagement

We held confidential conversations with each of the seven sitting directors over a period of six weeks. The conversations were structured but not scripted. We prepared an advisory document for the chair's private use, setting out the considerations we believed she should weigh in shaping the new composition of the board.

What followed

The advisory identified a gap in the board's collective experience that the departing directors had partially filled — and suggested criteria for one of the two open positions that the chair had not initially considered. Both positions were filled within four months. The chair noted afterwards that the criteria we had suggested for the second position proved the more useful of the two documents we had prepared.
