Teratai Konsult
The considered advantage of outside counsel

Why Principals Choose Us

What we offer that most
advisory relationships do not.

The case for working with Teratai Konsult is not built on scale, methodology or credentials alone. It rests on a particular combination of independence, experience and discretion that is less common than it should be.

A Summary of What We Bring

Each of the points below reflects something we have found genuinely matters to the principals we work with.

Unconflicted Independence

We hold no commercial relationships with third parties that could shape what we say. Our only obligation is to the principal we are working with.

Senior Practitioners Only

Every engagement is led by someone who has held senior responsibility in Malaysian business. There are no junior intermediaries between the client and the work.

Absolute Discretion

We do not discuss clients, cite engagements as case studies or accept speaking invitations that require naming our work. The relationship is private.

Written, Usable Output

Our deliverables are concise and written for use — not lengthy reports assembled to justify a fee. The principal can read, annotate and act on what we produce.

Malaysian Market Fluency

We understand the governance culture, the ownership conventions and the unwritten protocols that shape how established Malaysian firms actually work.

Measured, Unhurried Pace

We do not seek to extend engagements beyond what is useful. When the work is done, we say so. When more time is needed, we take it.

The Weight of Experience

Advisory work is only as useful as the experience behind it. Our principals have each spent long careers in the kinds of firms they now advise — as directors, managing directors, and in one case as a chairman. That background shapes not just the questions we ask, but the way we listen to the answers.

  • Combined senior leadership experience across manufacturing, property and financial services
  • Direct familiarity with Bursa listing requirements and the expectations of institutional shareholders
  • Personal experience navigating ownership transitions and board succession in Malaysian firms

Step 1

Introductory conversation

Unpressured, no obligation. We listen and ask a small number of questions.

Step 2

Scope and engagement letter

A short document setting out what the engagement involves and what it does not.

Step 3

The engagement itself

Structured sessions, careful preparation, a considered written output.

Step 4

Close or continuation

We close cleanly or discuss an extended arrangement if both parties find it worthwhile.

A Process Built Around the Principal

We do not impose a standard methodology on every engagement. The structure we use is shaped by the principal's situation, their available time and the nature of the questions at hand. The process is described clearly at the outset and does not change without agreement.

  • No unnecessary meetings — each session has a clear purpose
  • Written scope document agreed before work begins
  • Deliverable timed to the principal's decision-making needs, not our convenience

Availability Without Performance

A principal should be able to reach their advisor when a question arises — not wait for the next scheduled call. Retainer clients have direct access to their advisory principal, with a commitment to respond within one working day. We do not perform availability; we simply make ourselves available.

  • Direct access to the principal advisor throughout the engagement
  • Response to queries within one working day
  • Ad hoc conversations between scheduled sessions for retainer clients

Transparent, Settled Fees

Our fees are stated clearly before an engagement begins and do not change during it. There are no additional charges for preparation time, travel within Kuala Lumpur or ad hoc calls that arise in the normal course of the engagement. What is quoted is what is paid.

  • Fixed engagement fees, no variable or success-linked components
  • No billing for incidental communications
  • Invoice issued at the start of each engagement period

A Different Kind of Outside Counsel

The advisory market offers many things. Teratai Konsult offers a specific one. Here is how our approach differs from the more common alternatives.

The question Typical advisory firm Teratai Konsult
Who leads the engagement? A partner sells; analysts deliver The named principal throughout
Are fees transparent? Often based on hours billed; unpredictable Fixed, stated before the engagement begins
Is confidentiality assured? Client names often used in marketing Never cited; mutual NDA from the first day
Is output concise and usable? Lengthy decks assembled to justify fees Brief written notes suited to the principal's pace
Are commercial interests absent? Often affiliated with placement or distribution No third-party commercial relationships
Is Malaysian context understood? Frameworks imported from other markets Built from careers spent in Malaysian business

What Sets Our Work Apart

Certain aspects of our practice are not common in the broader advisory market. They are worth naming clearly.

No Methodology Dependency

We do not have a proprietary framework that every engagement must pass through. The work is shaped by the question, not by a toolkit we need to justify having purchased.

A Deliberately Small Client List

We limit the number of active engagements at any time. When we take on a client, we have the attention to give it. We do not grow the firm by adding clients faster than we can serve them.

No Interest in Implementation

We do not seek to follow an advisory engagement with an implementation mandate. Our role ends with the written reading. This means our counsel is not shaped by an eye on the next engagement.

Candid When It Matters

We say what we find, not what we think will be well received. If the outside reading is that a course of action carries more risk than the principal has considered, we say so — with care, but plainly.

Recognition and Membership

We hold our work to standards set by the bodies that govern professional practice in Malaysia.

MID Member

Malaysian Institute of Directors — full membership held by all firm principals

MIM Fellow

Malaysian Institute of Management — Fellow grade recognising sustained professional contribution

PDPA Compliant

Full compliance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 across all engagements

60+ Principals Served

Chief executives, managing directors and board chairs across Malaysia since founding
