Our Firm
A small firm built
around a long view.
Teratai Konsult was formed to offer a particular kind of advisory relationship — one where the principal's interests come first, the work is done with care, and the relationship is built to last.
Return to HomeHow the Firm Came to Be
Teratai Konsult was established in Kuala Lumpur by a group of practitioners who had spent the better part of their careers inside large Malaysian firms — as directors, advisors and, in several cases, as principals themselves. Over time, each of them noticed a gap that no large consultancy or advisory house was well-placed to fill: the need for a single, trusted outside voice who could sit with a chief executive or board chair, understand the particular texture of their situation, and offer a considered reading without any commercial agenda attached.
The name Teratai — the Malay word for lotus — was chosen with care. The lotus is a plant that takes root in still water, grows slowly, and surfaces without fanfare. We liked that image. Advisory work done well resembles it: the value is in what is drawn from depth, not from speed or spectacle.
We have worked with chairs and chief executives across a range of industries since the firm's founding — manufacturing, property, financial services, and privately held conglomerates among them. The engagements vary in scope and duration, but the approach does not. We listen carefully, prepare thoroughly, and offer our reading in a form the principal can use.
Our mission is a narrow one: to be genuinely useful to the small number of principals we work with at any given time. We do not seek scale. We do not take more work than we can serve well. And we measure our success by one thing — whether the principal found the engagement worth their time.
The People Behind the Work
Each engagement is led by a principal of the firm. There are no junior analysts between the client and the people who carry out the work.
Dato' Hasrul Nizam
Founding Principal
Formerly a managing director of a Bursa-listed industrial group, Dato' Hasrul brings three decades of operational leadership to the firm's strategic reading work.
Sharifah Radziah
Senior Advisor, Governance
With a long background in corporate secretarial practice and board governance, Sharifah leads the firm's board composition and succession advisory engagements.
Lim Kok Weng
Senior Advisor, Strategy
Previously a partner at a regional strategy house, Kok Weng brings rigorous analytical discipline to the firm's senior strategic reading and retainer engagements.
Our Standards of Practice
The protocols that govern how we work are not written for display — they are the practical expression of what we believe a professional advisory relationship requires.
Mutual Non-Disclosure
Every engagement begins with a mutual NDA. The terms protect both parties and are never varied without written agreement.
No Conflicts of Interest
Before accepting an engagement, we review our current client list for potential conflicts. If a conflict exists, we disclose it before proceeding.
Written Scope Agreement
Each engagement is defined in a short written scope document before work begins. The scope does not change without the principal's agreement.
Data Protection
All documents shared with us are stored securely and returned or destroyed at the engagement's close. We comply with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
Senior-Only Delivery
No engagement is delegated to anyone outside the named advisory team. The principal works with the people they engaged from the first conversation to the last.
Professional Accountability
Our principals are members of the Malaysian Institute of Directors and the Malaysian Institute of Management. We hold ourselves to the standards those bodies require.
Business Advisory in the Malaysian Context
Malaysian firms that have reached a certain scale tend to face questions that do not yield to standard frameworks. The governance dynamics of family-linked ownership, the particular responsibilities that come with a Bursa listing, the weight of long-standing relationships with government institutions — these are not adequately addressed by advisory material written for other markets.
Teratai Konsult works within that context. Our advisors have spent careers in Malaysia, working alongside the kinds of firms that form our client base. We understand the unwritten protocols as well as the formal ones. We know that the most important conversations in a Malaysian boardroom are not always the ones recorded in the minutes.
Our work draws on this depth of familiarity. When a chief executive brings a question to us, we do not begin by applying a framework from abroad. We begin by listening, and then by drawing on what we know about the particular environment in which the question sits. That local grounding is, we believe, one of the more durable things we offer.
We work in English as our primary language of engagement, with Bahasa Malaysia available when a principal prefers it. Our office is in Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur, and we are accessible to principals throughout Peninsular Malaysia.
